Day 13: Melbourne
(Post scheduled in advance. For current updates and pictures, follow me on Twitter!)
Today is our last day in Melbourne and tomorrow morning we’re on a plane to our final destination, Cairns, to learn about the Great Barrier Reef!
But there’s still plenty of Melbourne left to explore!
Here’s today’s itinerary:
- We’ll learn about the state government of Victoria during an official briefing with a government representative.
- Then we’ll take a ride on a Melbourne tram.
- We’ll visit Federation Square located in the heart of central Melbourne. It was conceived as a tribute to the first hundred years of Australian nationhood, and is now the central hub for Melbournians and visitors to meet, socialize and celebrate.
- We’ll learn some of the stories of the early immigrants to Australia. How did they adapt to a new country, new climate, new language, new currency and new lifestyle?
- Finally, we’ll get a bird’s eye view of Melbourne atop the Rialto Tower (link | link | link).
All the pictures!
Day 12: Melbourne (Updated)
(Post scheduled in advance. For current updates and pictures, follow me on Twitter!)
After our Home Stay, and one night in the Ibis, today is our first full day in Melbourne, Australia’s second largest city!
On today’s itinerary we’ll:
- Learn about Australia’s national gemstone, the opal, during a cutting and polishing demonstration at an opal establishment.
- Take in the historic and picturesque Churchill Island. This island settlement was actually the first European settlement in Victoria.
- Learn about the iconic Australian animal the koala from a ranger at this conversation centre that was established to create a natural habitat for the koala population within Phillip Island.
- Get up close and personal with the penguin, as our ranger takes us behind the scenes at the penguin parade.
- At sunset, we’ll experience this amazing phenomenon as the little penguins waddle from the sea to their burrows.
